Playing and understanding Baccarat rules
Most casinos, especially the large ones, have a specially designated area for baccarat. An elegant rope, and sometimes with guards, surrounds the playing area. This is attributed to baccarat’s high class status due to its association with the noble class of France during the 15th and 16th centuries. With this, baccarat players are known to be “high rollers”, plus the high amount of minimum required in betting on baccarat tables.
To play baccarat is easy enough. Unlike in most card games played in casinos, baccarat is played without the players holding the cards, unless they are allowed to deal the cards. A baccarat player is not even playing against other players at the table. The amount of money they win or lose does not have anything to do with any other baccarat player’s loosing or winnings. In baccarat, the main goal is to place the bet into a betting area that will get a value nearest to nine.
The baccarat game starts with each player betting on any of the three betting areas. The major betting areas are the Bank and the Player. These betting areas are the frequently bet upon areas in baccarat. The third and less frequently used is the “stand-off” betting areas, where the bets would win if the hand of the Banker equals the hand of the Player.
When the bets are in place the cards are dealt face-up, with two cards each for the Bank and the Player. A third card is dealt according to the value of the hands in the two betting areas. An eight or nine always stands for both the Banker and the Player. The hand is called “natural”, if it totals either eight or nine. Other values are subject to the rules that are automatically followed in a baccarat game when dealing a third card.
You can never be busted in a game of baccarat like in other card games in casinos such as blackjack. In baccarat, exceeding the value of nine will add up the digits of the value and the total serves as the value of the hand. In addition, all the face cards, including the tens of any suit, is equivalent to zero.
When the values of the hands are established, a dealer from the casino will collect the bets that lose and distribute the winnings. A percentage of the winnings will usually be paid to the casino.
